EEG

EEG (Electroencephalography) is a non-invasive, painless test that records the electrical activity of the brain.

EEG is s the only available examination that provides direct insight into how the brain functions, making it a functional test that cannot be replaced by brain imaging methods such as MRI. EEG is commonly used in the diagnosis of epilepsy, to help locate seizure foci (epileptogenic zones), and to monitor the effectiveness of anti-seizure medications.

Your doctor may recommend an EEG to determine whether symptoms such as seizures, convulsions, memory loss, or confusion are of epileptic origin.

In epilepsy management, EEG also helps distinguish between focal epilepsy and primary generalized epilepsy, which affects the entire brain. This information is essential in choosing the most effective treatment.

What Happens During the Exam?

  1. A trained EEG technologist will place a cap with metal electrodes on your scalp. A conductive gel will be applied to help transmit brain signals through the electrodes.
  2. You will be asked to lie still with your eyes closed, ideally relaxed and calm, while the recording takes place. It is important to follow the technician’s instructions, which may include opening your eyes, or breathing deeply through your mouth or nose.
  3. In some cases, the technician may expose you to flashing lights as part of the test. You will be informed in advance, and you should keep your eyes closed during this part.
  4. Please inform the technician immediately if you experience any discomfort during the procedure.

* You may be asked to come in after sleep deprivation (e.g., staying awake from midnight the night before the test). If so, it is recommended to arrive with a companion for your safety. You will be informed in advance if sleep deprivation is required.

Before the test, wash your hair with regular shampoo. Do not use conditioner, hairspray, or styling products, as these may interfere with electrode contact.

How Long Does It Take?

The entire EEG procedure usually takes about 30 minutes.
